| Swaledale in the 19th century was a major lead mining centre. This is the remnant of a massive chimney, which snaked up the hill for nearly a mile. Long chimneys like this one were used to create tremendous draught for the lead smelting kilns. More about lead mining and Swaledale in general can be found here. |
